(Respect to T.S.)
Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty
Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty
I wish all the women in their 40s
Would just find their lost cats.
Please
I wish all the cats would just go home.
Please
I wish they would take down all the signs
LOST - Scaredy Cat
LOST - Kitty Cat
Seriously cats
Just go home.
Cos your owners really scare me.
And the ghosts of long gone young girls
They laugh at me.
"Grey" they call me.
And I hear them snigger as I try to scale a wall.
Stop it
Stop it
Stop it
Unleash the dogs.
Send the cats home.
Bring back the girls.
I preferred the girls.
I really did.
I really preferred them
To the worried look
Of women alone in their 40s
Looking for their lost cats.
Don't they know how much it scares me
That worried look
Of women alone in their 40s
Looking for lost cats
Meeow.
Meeow.
Meeow.

Just to prove to @Chickorie that it is possible to comment that I am not a misogynist

ReplyDeleteYou make it sound like I accused you of that. For heaven's sake. (I'm trying using Firefox now.) Here's what I wanted to say earlier:
ReplyDeleteI saw on Twitter that apparently there are "People hearing misogyny." There's no misogyny here. At least as I understand it, tonight, the poem expresses the fear of getting old, beautifully. I love it --or will someday soon when it isn't quite so painful.
Folks, you read poetry differently than say, an article or story. You read a poem carefully, downright peruse it. Then, do it again. And again. Then think about it. Read it again. After all that, you might venture an opinion.
Three hours later: Now, after all that, and given Prufrock and "'Grey' they call me..." --I'm still sure the message is not "I want younger women", but I'm no longer sure what it might be...
That's cool.
DeleteDon't know if I can answer.
Youth I suspect is more pertinent than gender.
But who knows what goes on in the depths.
And sure if was not without complication, it would all be easy.
